Jaded Amour

The train rocked a slow lullaby;
Her eyes gazed into the distance.
Around her, ringing laughter; Happiness.
Inside her, a swirling storm of sadness.

Threatening to breach
The banks of her eyes.
Quivering mouth,
Wavering mind.

Drifting in and out
Between brass tacks and times long gone

She couldn’t tell what was worse –
The emptiness he left behind
Or the lingering scruples from yore.
